Best Things to do in Abersoch With a Dog

We are a bunch of animal lovers here in North Wales, and Abersoch is the perfect destination for a dog friendly holiday. With sandy beaches, coastal walking routes, stunning scenery and a good selection of pet friendly shops and attractions, it’s easy to see why so many people opt to stay around here whenever they fancy a break away from the everyday.

Using our local knowledge and personal experiences, we’ve put together a list of what we consider to be the top 5 best things to do in Abersoch with a dog. Whether you are keen to stretch your legs, enjoy a little retail therapy or simply spend the day relaxing on the beach, we’re sure you’ll find plenty of great things to do with your furry companion by your side in this wonderful seaside town.

1. Go For a Walk
One of the best ways to discover Abersoch and the wider Llyn Peninsula with your dog is to head out on the walk. One of the most scenic is the dog friendly circular walking route from Abersoch to Mynytho. At around 5 miles in length, this route offers a good combination of countryside and coastal scenery, making it an enjoyable adventure for both dogs and their owners alike.

The walk starts at the Abersoch Village Hall car park before heading through the town and past the harbour. From here, the route continues towards Mynytho, passing through gorgeous, tranquil fields as you make your way up to an elevated position where you can enjoy views across Abersoch Bay and onwards towards St Tudwal’s Islands.

The return journey follows the Wales Coast Path, providing a different perspective of the landscape before bringing you back towards Abersoch Village Hall. As with any countryside walk, we’d strongly advise keeping your pooch on a lead in case you encounter any livestock.

2. Head to the Beach
You can’t visit Abersoch without spending some time on its famous beach, and dog owners are no exception to this rule. However, there are seasonal restrictions in place on Abersoch beach which dog owners must adhere to. Dogs are not permitted on the northern section of Abersoch Beach between 1st April and 30th September each year. This is clearly signposted but Abersoch beach remains dog friendly throughout the rest of the year.

If you are enjoying a holiday in Abersoch during this peak period where the restrictions apply, there’s no need to be concerned because there are plenty of alternative beaches to take into consideration. One of these is Llanbedrog Beach, a beautiful sandy beach where dogs are welcome throughout the year.

For dog lovers who want to make this part of North Wales a regular holiday destination, Crugan Holiday Park is definitely worth taking into consideration. Located just a short walk from Llanbedrog beach, this exceptional resort is available to holiday home owners only. All owners staying on park enjoy having direct access to the beach, giving them the opportunity to enjoy scenic seaside walks with their four legged companion whenever they decide to visit.

3. Visit Plas yn Rhiw
For a change of scenery, you can decide to make the short journey to Plas yn Rhiw, a National Trust property overlooking the Llyn Peninsula. This quaint manor house is surrounded by woodland, gardens and countryside, with wonderful views provided across the coast.

While dogs cannot accompany their owners into every part of the property, they are welcome on short leads along the lower woodland paths and in the tearoom courtyard. This makes it possible to combine a little sightseeing with a pleasant walk before stopping for refreshments together in a tearoom which has gained a reputation for exceptional customer service and tasty cuisine. Here you’ll be able to choose from a selection of drinks, cakes, snacks and light bites.

4. Grab a Bite to Eat
Exploring Abersoch’s dog friendly attractions is hungry work, so make sure you allocate some time for a meal or cafe stop where your four legged friend can accompany you.

Alongside the cafe at Plas yn Rhiw, one of the best dog friendly places to eat in Abersoch is The Potted Lobster which specialises in seafood. Utilising fresh local produce, the meals here are out of this world and there are plenty of great options available to this who would prefer something which hasn’t come out of the ocean. Dog are also accommodated here, with there being a small number of dog friendly tables in the restaurant and a fully dog friendly outdoor terrace.

If you’d prefer something a little more casual or are just looking for a drink or a snack then we’d strongly recommend making time to visit The Little Tearooms at Mickey’s Boatyard on Machroes Beach. Sitting right beside the sandy shores, it provides a wonderfully relaxed setting for a pit stop during a coastal walk. The cafe has a reputation for welcoming four legged visitors warmly, with dogs able to enjoy treats and refreshments alongside their owners. This includes the chance for them to enjoy some dog friendly ice cream!

The menu gives the humans of the group plenty to look forward to as well, with options including exceptional artisan coffees, breakfast rolls, sandwiches, toasties and locally sourced human ice cream too. It is also licensed to serve alcohol, making it a tempting place to relax after a challenging walk.

5. Go Shopping
