Abergele Beach (Pensarn Beach)

One of the lesser talked of and much quieter seaside resorts is Abergele Beach, otherwise known as Pensarn Beach. This attractive stretch of North Wales coastline sits between Rhyl and Colwyn Bay, offering a much more peaceful alternative to some of its more mainstream neighbours.

One of the biggest attractions of Pensarn Beach is its peaceful atmosphere. While nearby resorts such as Rhyl, Prestatyn and Colwyn Bay can become particularly busy during the summer months, Abergele Beach tends to offer a more relaxed experience.
The beach provides plenty of space for walking and enjoying the scenery, making it a good choice for families who want to escape the hustle and bustle. It is also a lovely spot for simply sitting back and watching the waves, enjoying a picnic or taking a leisurely stroll along the coastline.
The character of Abergele Beach changes with the tide, revealing areas of sand and shingle that make the coastline particularly scenic. On a clear day, you can enjoy impressive views along the North Wales coast while the mountains behind provide a dramatic backdrop further inland. Looking towards the mountains, you’ll be able to spot the spectacular Gwrych Castle from Abergele Beach which recently rose to fame as the filming location for reality TV programme ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!”.
Walk the North Wales Coast Path
Running directly alongside Abergele Beach is a wide, flat and scenic promenade, making this part of the coastline particularly appealing to walkers and ramblers. The promenade forms part of the North Wales Coast Path, providing eager ramblers with access to miles of beautiful coastal walking opportunities.
Its relatively level surface makes it suitable for a relaxed family stroll, while more energetic walkers can use Pensarn as a starting point for longer coastal adventures. There is something particularly enjoyable about walking beside the sea with the sound of the waves on one side and the North Wales landscape stretching out around you.
The flat nature also makes it perfect for cycling. Whether you’re going on a short ride with the children or taking on a longer cycle route with friends or family, Pensarn Beach can make an ideal starting point.
The promenade is also dog friendly throughout the year, provided dogs are kept on a lead. Dogs are permitted on Pensarn Beach throughout the winter months, but there will be restrictions in place in certain sections during peak periods. We’d advise checking the local signage to ensure you are complying with the regulations should you take your four legged companion along on the visit.
Pensarn Beach Facilities
There is convenient paid parking close to Abergele train station, making it relatively straightforward to reach Pensarn Beach by car or rail. The area around the car park also provides a selection of useful facilities including toilets, fast food outlets, amusement arcades and cafes.
Unquestionably one of the best places to eat here is Pantri Beach Cafe & Gift Shop which has built a loyal following in the local area thanks to the quality of its food, with large portions almost a given irrespective of whether you order fish & chips, a full Welsh breakfast or a panini. It is an excellent place to stop for refreshments during your visit, whether you fancy a coffee, a bite to eat or something sweet after a walk along the promenade.
