Gwrych Castle in Wales
Few historic attractions in North Wales capture the imagination quite like Gwrych Castle. Standing proudly on a wooded hillside overlooking the North Wales coastline, this remarkable country estate is located just 4 miles from Tan Rallt Holiday Park and less than 5 miles from Bryn Defaid Holiday Park, making it one of the easiest and most fascinating days out for guests of all ages staying at either location.
Combining centuries of fascinating history with breathtaking views, beautiful woodland walks and a recent surge in fame brought about by its appearance in the reality TV show ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!’, Gwrych Castle in Wales has become one of the region’s must-visit attractions.
Construction of Gwrych Castle began in the early 19th century under the instruction of Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh, who transformed the estate into one of Britain’s most impressive Gothic country houses. Built between 1810 and the early 1820s, the castle was designed to resemble a medieval fortress, complete with imposing towers, battlements and dramatic stone architecture. The estate went on to become home to several generations of the Hesketh family before passing through various owners during the 20th century. Following decades of decline after World War 2, the castle suffered extensive damage through neglect and vandalism. Fortunately, the dedicated work of the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust has helped to bring this extraordinary landmark back to its former glory, with ongoing restoration efforts ensuring future generations can continue to appreciate its rich history and spectacular setting.
Today, tourists can explore many areas of the castle while learning about the families who once lived within it. Informative displays explain how the estate evolved over the centuries, while restored rooms and exhibitions offer an insight into daily life during the Victorian era. Throughout the castle, historic photographs, artefacts and interpretation panels help bring the building’s fascinating history to life, allowing visitors to discover why Gwrych Castle in Wales remains one of the country’s most significant historic attractions.
In recent years, Gwrych Castle has experienced a surge in fame after serving as the filming location for the hugely popular reality television series I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! when the programme temporarily relocated from Australia during 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Fans of the show can still enjoy a dedicated exhibition featuring recognisable props, costumes, photographs and memorabilia from the series. Displays highlight many of the memorable moments filmed at the castle, providing a unique opportunity to stand where celebrities took part in some of television’s most talked-about challenges. These exhibits have proved especially popular with families and TV enthusiasts, adding another fascinating dimension to an already memorable attraction.
Outside the castle, visitors can spend hours exploring the extensive grounds, which stretch across hundreds of acres of rolling parkland and ancient woodland. Scenic walking trails wind through the estate, passing ornamental gardens, historic boundary walls and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the Irish Sea, Conwy Bay and the surrounding countryside. Wildlife is abundant throughout the estate, making every visit slightly different depending on the season, while photographers will find countless opportunities to capture the castle’s captivating silhouette against the North Wales landscape.
Gwrych Castle is generally open to visitors on selected days throughout the week, with opening times and days varying depending on the season. Additional guided tours, exhibitions and family activities are often put on during school holidays and other peak periods. As opening arrangements can occasionally change, we advise our holiday makers to check the castle’s latest opening times and admission information before travelling to a wasted trip.
