The history of Bodnant Gardens dates back to 1874 when the estate was purchased by Henry Davis Pochin, an industrial chemist and passionate horticulturalist. Working alongside some of the country’s leading garden designers and plant collectors, he transformed the estate into one of Britain’s finest gardens. Over the decades, generations of the McLaren family continued to expand and enhance the gardens, introducing rare species collected from around the world. Today, visitors can explore an extraordinary collection of Champion Trees, National Plant Collections, formal terraces, woodland gardens, riverside walks and carefully designed landscapes that continue to evolve while remaining true to the vision of their original creators.
Visitors looking for the latest Bodnant Gardens opening times will find that the gardens are open daily throughout the year from 9:30am until 5:00pm, with the on-site shop generally opening from 10:00am until 5:00pm and the cafe welcoming diners from 9:00am onwards. Last admission to the gardens is thirty minutes before closing. The attraction is open seven days a week for most of the year but closes on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Between April and the end of September, dogs on short, non-extendable leads are permitted in the gardens from Thursday through to Sunday. From October until the end of March, dogs are welcome every day, making autumn and winter particularly attractive times for those planning a visit with their four-legged friends. The wide network of pathways, woodland trails and open spaces provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy a relaxing walk together while taking in the spectacular surroundings.

The Dell remains one of the most picturesque sections of the gardens, with winding paths leading past waterfalls, streams and mature woodland planting. Gentle pathways suitable for most visitors allow guests to explore at their own pace, while many of the routes are equally enjoyable for dog owners visiting during designated dog-friendly periods. Along the way, stunning viewpoints provide panoramic views across the Conwy Valley towards the mountains of Snowdonia beyond, making every walk as rewarding as the gardens themselves.

The on-site Magnolia Cafe and Pavilion Tearooms provide an excellent choice of freshly prepared lunches, homemade cakes, hot drinks and light refreshments, with both indoor and outdoor seating available. The National Trust shop offers gifts, gardening accessories, books and locally inspired souvenirs, while the adjoining garden centre provides visitors with the opportunity to purchase many of the plants and flowers that have inspired them during their visit.
