North Wales Coastal Path Walks

If you love the combination of sea air, flat promenades and dramatic headlands, the North Wales Coastal Path offers some of the UK’s best walking routes. Along the way, you’ll find long sandy beaches, historic piers, Victorian towns and quiet sections where the only soundtrack is the crash of the waves and cry of the seagulls.

We’ve used our first hand knowledge of the region to put together a selection of our favourite walks along the coastal path which are perfect for anyone who is planning a walking holiday in North Wales. From promenade strolls that are perfect for families, to slightly longer rambles that really show off the cliffs, wildlife and postcard views.

1. Colwyn Bay Promenade
The Colwyn Bay promenade has recently undergone a significant redevelopment which has turned it into one of the most modern seafronts in the country. Along the way you’ll now find plenty of facilities made up of cafes, fast food kiosks, ice cream parlours and plenty of activities for children made up of climbing apparatus, educational toys and a family friendly crazy golf course.

Not only is the Colwyn Bay promenade long and flat, it also features plenty of seafront benches and picnic tables which is ideal for those who struggle to walk long distances. A very gentle walking route to take into consideration here if you are planning a walk with children is the compact Colwyn Bay Promenade loop which covers around 1.7 miles. The many on-site amenities ensure that there will be plenty across the way to keep the children’s minds engaged.

Those who are on the lookout for something a little more challenging may want to take the route from Colwyn Bay to Llandudno via the Little Orme. This is a 5.5 mile walk which balances seaside views with rocky headland. The route is well signposted, relatively flat and offers plenty of public transport options if you are only willing to commit to an out and back walk.

There are plenty of parking options available along the Colwyn Bay seafront too, with the seaside town being just a few miles away from our Bryn Defaid and Tan Rallt Holiday Parks.

2. Rhyl Promenade
Rhyl beach and promenade is one of the most recognisable seafronts in the country and is famous for the extensive array of facilities around it. Think fast food kiosks, candy floss vendors, donkey rides and those famous seaside amusement arcades.

All of this makes it a great choice if you are planning a walk as a family, with other facilities nearby including children’s play areas, cafes, restaurants and the wonderful miniature railway at Marine Lake. The Rhyl Promenade is dog friendly too, which means that there is no need to leave any member of the family out of what will undoubtedly be a fun day out at the seaside.

The Rhyl Promenade forms part of many of the best coastal walking routes in North Wales, and it is easy to join one of these from various points in the town. You can combine this with longer coastal sections if you are feeling ambitious, with the seafront extending to Prestatyn in one direction and Towyn & Abergele in the other.

Of course, Rhyl Beach is located just a short walk away from our very own Marine Holiday Park. If you happen to be staying at our award winning resort, we’d strongly recommend making yourself familiar with the town’s seafront, with no holiday in Rhyl being complete until you have explored it.

3. Pwllheli Promenade
On the Llyn Peninsula, Pwllheli gives you a different coastal flavour: a sheltered, south-facing beach framed by dunes and a pretty marina. The promenade here is an understated delight — stroll past sand, dunes and boats; from some points you can enjoy expansive views across Cardigan Bay and the curvature of the peninsula.

Of course, Pwllheli promenade is directly accessible from Gimblet Rock Holiday Park, with all of our guests enjoying direct access to the promenade plus Pwllheli beach, making our resort the perfect place to stay if you are planning a seaside holiday in North Wales.

There are plenty of walking routes along the North Wales Coastal Path which start off at Pwllheli Promenade or the harbour which lies adjacent to our resort. Local guides will often recommend a 4 mile circular walk which mixes Pwllheli’s charming town centre, seafront and some of the cliff top section. This makes for a good half day out which takes in the very best vistas that Pwllheli has to offer. You’ll find plenty of other wonderful Pwllheli walks in our dedicated guide.

4. Great Orme Walk
Another great walk along the North Wales Coastal Path to consider if you aren’t afraid of some steep hills is the walk up the Great Orme from Llandudno promenade. This 2.5 mile walk takes you all the way from Llandudno promenade to the very summit of the Great Orme, which is 679 feet above sea level.

Once you reach the top you can reward yourself with some refreshments in the visitor centre cafe which serves an excellent selection of light bites. There’s also plenty on show here to grab the attention of history buffs, with displays providing information about the role that the region played in the 2nd World War via its Royal Artillery and Aerial Defence Research Centre.

If you can’t quite face the prospect of the return trip, then you can simply take advantage of the cable car rides or jump aboard the tram back to the centre of Llandudno.
